I dreamt of you before you entered my life. You were there, calling to me, knowing we had to be in each other’s life. It was Sarah, who worked at a shelter then, to whom I confided my dog filled dreams. I was very sick at the time and those dreams were the sweet respite from days filled with pain. She called me and said “I found her”.
I went to pick you up and brought you home, it was to be a trial run. You threw up in the car, letting me know, for the first time, that car rides were not your thing.
I brought you home and I knew we were meant to be.
My brother came to see me that day, and I remember his face, when he came through the door and said “who is this?”, I didn’t respond, “I’m fostering”. I said, “she’s my puppy”. And you were.
You came with a name that didn’t quite match your personality, so I sought out other names that would. I asked around, and I remember it was Elizabeth who said your name for the first time.
You were one of a kind, and you truly were. Whenever I was asked what you were I would say she is a sea lion, chihuahua gremlin mix. But the truth is, you were Batman. I just kept your secret.
You loved snow, to frolick and romp in it, and I am so glad that the day before you left it snowed, so when I carried you outside so you could relieve yourself, you couldn’t see it, as your eyes had gone already, but you felt it and you smelt it, and I am sure it gave you some respite from the pain you were feeling.

To all those of you who are not knitters let me tell you about it. The amazing designer tells you in September what kind of yarn you need for the mystery shawl and then he releases a clue to knit every week of October.
You knit alongside thousands of people all over the world, showing off their colors, sharing their own adjustments and creativity.
I’d never done anything like this before and my hunt for the right colors took me to all local yarn stores until I got what I wanted at @theknittingloft

Two days after this #mkal began (mystery knit a-long), the most atrocious and barbaric thing happened to my people.
I had planned to post and share the process of this shawl but instead I’ve been posting about hate, about 240 people who were brutally taken from their families as hostages, I’ve been posting about history and reality, because although all other minorities put the work to learning on the other, we, as Jews, don’t deserve that privilege from the world (yes, I’m being sarcastic). We have to yell in order to be heard, we have to cry in order to be seen as humans. Let alone a minority. .02% of the world.
And yet the recipients of so much hate.

Every stitch of this shawl reminds me of those who’ve stood by our side and those who’ve justified r4pe because “context”.
Every stitch reminds me of all those who reached out and keep doing it, using their voice, surprised at the blindness of the progressive allies we’ve stood by and who have now thrown us to the trash. Because Jews, you know? Favorite scapegoat of the world. Not minority enough for all you social warriors.
Don’t worry? Our #intergenerationaltrauma is alive and well and you keep not learning.
Don’t worry, the Jewish people around the world are feeling our connection to each other is stronger than ever before.

Don’t worry, we’ve survived persecution, murder, pogroms and hate for thousands of years. We’ll survive this too. And we’ll remember.
And we’ll keep on knitting beautiful things.
