What I’ve been watching (2)

Sense8 – Another Netflix original. Thank you Wachowski siblings.

It is, obviously, a sci fi like series (one season out only so far) which has eight individuals around the world who have a connection which makes them surpass physical limits and gifts them the ability to hear, see, and even interact within the bodies of the other seven.

So what if you are a Nigerian bus driver? a Corean businesswoman will save your butt by fighting for you when you get robbed. So what if you are a German gangster who can’t lie? A Mexican gay telenovela actor will do it for you. So what if you are an Islandic musician who had been kidnapped? A Trans hacker from the Bay Area will find you.

The premise is interesting but not utterly original. Connection between individuals, wanting to erradicate the loneliness that is inherent in all of us is part of humanity’s narrative.

And the bad guys? well, as always, like Orphan Black, like Fringe, there will always be the one (s) who will not want things to be different, who will want to eradicate you.

What makes this tv series a bing-watching kind of thing is the photography and the edition. As a viewer you are transported from one side to the world to the other, from one culture to another without warning, but in such a seamless, delicious way that you just have to flow and enjoy.

Episode 6, called “Demons”,  has a wonderful scene in which all of the characters are engaging in intimate activity with their partners. Because they can feel, see, hear and interact from the bodies of the other seven, this moment in the series becomes a multi focal orgy in which the 8 characters feel what it is like to make love as 8 different people. Imagine feeling your own pleasure, your partner’s pleasure and that of seven other people and their own partners. The editing of this scene is a work of art and totally worth it. Brilliant eroticism.

bottomline: Yes. Must watch.
